This is my newsletter.
I appreciate your attention. In a time of endemic illiteracy, I am happy that anyone has the patience to wade through some of these entries.
Although this newsletter began as an outlet for what could be called China analysis, I have relaxed the rule, so I can write about industrial policy, philosophy, fringe internet politics, perfume, Vietnamese cinema and Korean history and Swedish Maoism, life in Tokyo, where I have lived for the past decade, and life in the places that I have lived before. Since I make a living as a translator of contemporary Chinese fiction, you will also see some of that sort of material.
This is where I can experiment with writing that is not marketable. I will not waste your time.
I know that you have no shortage of options. I can only hope that I have stumbled occasionally across ideas that are novel. I hope that you find this entertaining, or thought-provoking, or at least a distraction.
I would appreciate your subscription. I would appreciate if you could toss a coin in the bucket and pay for a subscription. It’s a good deal: much of the more interesting writing I have done on this platform is now locked behind glass.
